It isn't just the body language this Yanowamö Indian is displaying, it's the suspicion written in his eyes. He was looking at a naba. Many of the more than twenty thousand Yanowamo's between Venezuela and Brazil have yet to see a "white" naba. (Yanowamö name for a national or white man.) One afternoon in the deep jungle I watched as two Indians appeared while we were shooting some monkeys for dinner. They actually trembled as they looked at us. Totally unglued! They had never seen people like us! So this is what naba's look like.
