Honorarium is a ticklish word loosely defined "How much do we pay this guy?"

To bring a speaker and/or talent (singer, group, etc.) in to your camp or retreat will cost. That’s a fact of camping! We are talking about two things here. First, expenses which amount to transportation and on the road costs. Second, what will be given for his/their "ministry" while at your camp.

The time to talk this over, is when your talent or speaker is first contacted for availability (by phone). Don't be bashful but do be tactful! He (or they) will tell you what he expects by way of on the road expenses and honorarium. Remember some of these people have jobs they will have to quit for a period of time others make their living by speaking, singing or playing in a group. Individuals as well as groups have differing policies. Some will want a money deposit up front because they have been burned. Others would appreciate cash or a check at the time of their use. Others will want the check made out to their organization. Some simple "trust God" (Don't take advantage of them) There is a lot variety here. Best to phone him! The check list:

  1. What will your expenses be? will you be driving or flying? Would you want us to buy your ticket and send it to you?

  2. What kind of honorarium would you be comfortable with? How would you want us to handle this. Cash, check, now or later? Caution, never try to negotiate for a bargain . . . and remember you generally get what you pay for.

  3. Be sure to get their telephone number home and office and of course the address that will reach them fastest.

P.S At this same time your should give the man an idea of how and when you are going to use him. Ask for his input. Be sure to follow up this conversation with a letter confirming the dates and ministry agreed upon. (At this point he might need a map.) Note: Be sure to call the man (speaker, talent, manager, etc.) one or two weeks before the camp or retreat to reconfirm being sure everything is on schedule and exchanging last minute changes.
