COMMENTS about this page: Bible teaching is what I like to do best. It seems God honors His Word. This passage has a lot of practical truth to it. If you can pick up some ideas from this, great!

Frame: This Chapter in Luke tells of three stories, all of them dealing with the lost being found. The story of the lost son is full of practical lessons if we use it as an analogy. Lets look at the Prodigal Son and the lessons he learned by leaving his loving father.

  1. This young man grew tired of his (wealthy) home. The work, the rules, the obligations. He was spoiled ... not appreciating who he was or what he had.

  2. Father give me my inheritance ... now. (V-12) Our inheritance from Father God: my life, my looks, my energy, my health, my hands, feet, eyes ... my capacity to enjoy life!

  3. The grass is always greener on the other side! I want to really live. I want excitement! No controls! No restrictions!

  4. Trip to a foreign land ! (V-13) The land of "No-No"! His trip from the "Kingdom of Light" into the "Kingdom of Darkness" and back! from the Christian life into the World! And it was foreign. It was exciting. The world will give you pleasure (at a price) even credit. Satan has a very popular "Play now, pay later" plan!

    • He had bucks $$$.

    • Rented a nice studio.

    • Bought a cool car.

    • Bought a stereo & stacks of CD's.

    • Bought great clothes.

    • Bought booze.

    • Party! Party! Party!

    • Made friends ... real friends?

  5. The big BOMB ! Then came the bomb. Two bombs! (V-14)

    1. When he had spent everything ... it all ran out!

    2. God sent a famine! (Held back the rain.)

  6. I'll get a job! No problem. I've got friends ... lots of friends. "Right!!"

  7. Living with the pigs! (V-15) ... leads to the pig-trough. A hungry, hurting, millionaires son ... competing with the pigs ... for the worlds food! Pig slop!

  8. Came to himself! (V-17) What does it take to get a man to come to himself??

  9. Back to his father & home. (V-20) (Eating "Humble Pie") He received ...

    • Grace

    • Forgiveness

    • Restoration ... after repentance.

Back in the family as the son he was. My son was dead but now is alive!

  10. Footnote, lest we misunderstand grace. He never got his inheritance back!
