COMMENTS about this page: I would like to take this opportunity to thank so many of you who have made me a rich man! A very rich man. Through the years you have taken the time to write a note or letter of encouragement letting me know that I've made a contribution to your life. Comments like these confirm to me that my goal in life was a valid one. I've always wanted to be a person God could and would use to make a difference in lives. A few of these letters and comments are listed below.
Dear Von
It's been a while since I've been able to send you any support but I want you to know that I have not forgotten you or the spiritual contribution to made to my life and the lives of many others in your commitment to service Christ. It takes only one shepherd's staff to keep a wayward sheep on track at any given time. I will never forget the impact you had on my life during my Jr. High years some twenty years ago; your humor and ability to convey biblical truths to often obnoxious young teens made my camp experiences ones of spiritual growth and renewed commitment to follow Christ.
I hope you will never doubt the significance of your work. You do not know the impact you have had for the good or the lives of your ministry has touched, only God knows this. I was just one of a hundred of those cute and crazy kids up at Forest Home during the early 1970's, but God knows how much I needed to see the righteous commitment that energized you. I did see it and it helped keep me focused on the goodness of God during a very vulnerable time in my life.
I just want to thank you again, some day soon we will all be in very good company and God will let you see at that time how many will be able to stand before Him because you stood as an example for them. May God continue to bless you in your ministry. Love in Christ.
P.S. Our prayers are with you and those who suffered during the winter rains.
— Anne Ferguson Olson
Dear Pastor Von
I just received your account of the capsize and I thought of the Apostle Paul and his shipwreck. Thanks be unto God for saving you so He can use you again for His glory! I attended the Wednesday meetings at C.E.B.C. when I was a student at La Jolla High from '72 - '75 then lost touch with you during my years at UCSB. We met again in '79 when I began to work with Chuck Lamb doing Campus Life clubs in North County after I graduated. After Talbot in '85 we met again when I brought some groups from M.E.F.C. with you to T.J. ministry. I am one more product of your fruitful ministry. Stay alive and produce more! Yours and His,
— Larry Grine, Mission Evangelical Free Church, Vista, CA.
It seems like a good time to tell you what a big difference you make! I have heard Victor express that it was because of your ministry at the orphanage (Rose Park,Tijuana) that he is a Christian today. Felipe still asks about you on occasion and has said that you and your team, were the only good part of his memories there. You are doing a good work, Von, and we love you for it.
— Victor & Lynn Diaz. Missionaries to El Salvador
I just want to tell you that I received your letter and thank you for writing. It was nice to see you at Emmanuel Orphanage. I praise God for you and for the tremendous blessing you have been in my life and I know in the life of all the other young men that used to be in the Rose Park orphanage. God Bless you Pastor Von
— Gonzalo Peralta
Thank you for the time you've spent with my teens. Many (13) are seriously considering serving God in the Mission Field. I am grateful for your impact as they consider what God would have them to do. Thanks.
— Ray Harris and the ECBC Youth Group
From the NTM Mission School in Venezuela: To Von.
I do want to thank you very much for coming to our school. I enjoyed listening to what you had to say. I know that I don't remember everything you said, but some things still are stuck in my mind. Thanks for your time. I will be praying for you and for your work.
— Rachel Smet
Thanks so much for coming down again! (Venezuela) I don't know why, but your arrivals are always so welcomed. You really are such a blessing, and we love you for it. Thanks again.
— Jennifer Gwyer
Thanks for everything.
I really appreciated your coming and talking to us. It really meant a lot to me especially since this is my last year here. You really mean a lot to me.
— Dawn Shaylor
To the Spectrum Board
I am writing to thank you for your part in making Pastor Von's recent trip to our school possible. Each year we look forward to Von's time here with us. Although he spends most of the time with our teens, Von also ministers to our elementary students as well as to the adults on base. Each group is equally blessed, entertained, and challenged by Von as he speaks from the Word regarding pertinent issues for each audience. We feel very fortunate to have had the privilege of his yearly visits. We would be most grateful to have him come and share with us during the '94 - '95 academic year. We praise the Lord as we see growth and maturity in the lives of our young people here at RSA. It is a thrill to see many of them return to serve the Lord here in Venezuela or to hear of their ministry to Him in the US and around the world. Again, we thank you for providing the finances and allowing Von the time to come here. Laboring together,
— Tom Moore, acting principal of Robert Shaylor Academy/Tama, Tama
God's blessings on you, Von. I feel a debt of gratitude to you for the input you've had in my life, and I pray that God would multiply back the blessings a thousand times. In His Love — Rob Bailey
Your example of God's love in the balance of mercy and justice, as you work among the poor has infected Joy and made a profound impact on her life. From a mother, I thank you again, for eternity.
— Marilyn Van De Hoy (Her mother)
Words can't express the gratitude I feel when I remember what you did for us when we were green missionaries at Rose Park. Your concern & help kept us going and made life bearable many times. Also the happiness on the faces of our kids when they had had their baths & had a mark from you gave us joy, too. Thank you!
— LeAnn & Wil Bowers
D.J. is nearly 15, Ryan is 11. My husband makes it clear to us that he's not interested in knowing Jesus. I find it difficult to lead these young believers spiritually when they don't always seem interested. Today when they shared the letter (of my diverticulitis) with me, they were very willing to pray with me for your health, for your secretary's situation, and for Spectrum's work. D.J. also took the letter to Youth Group so they could pray too. I just wanted you to know that God has used you, and is still using you, to impact these young lives. Thank you.
— Gayle Mahnke
I want to thank you not only for your support but for your encouragement to me. I have learned a great deal from you, not so much by what you say but by what you do. You are a good example and I praise God for that.
— John Alvarado
I'm so grateful for your model of ministry to many people in San Diego and around the globe. They've seen longevity, persistence and commitment ... traits that aren't in abundance these days. I'm grateful that God has protected your ministry over the years in so many ways ... the border, cars, accusations, etc. We will continue to pray and support you as well.
— Graig Knudsen, Pastor Community Covenant Church
As always the Institute gang said your involvement was one of the highlights. Thank you for your remarkable ability to communicate and your willingness to serve. You are a special friend.
— Jim Burns, President National Institute of Youth Ministry
We thank you so much for the ministry you've had in our kid's lives and the blessing and encouragement you have been to Mike and me. We value the wisdom & counsel you always leave behind.
— Mike & Gwen Klontz, N.T.Missionaries in Bolivia
We are some Aussieswho spent some time with you in October '92. This time had a very profound, life changing effect on all of us and in some ways spoiled our everyday lives for us. Of this we are most thankful. On behalf of my Mum, husband and myself I thank you for the inspiration you have been to us. May Jesus bless you richly.
— Parisa Hafer, Australia
Our three sons, Jesse, Ben & Sam, all have reported that Pastor Von is one awesome dude. It's an encouragement to us to see your ministry in our son's lives. At this age, the boys sometimes listen better to someone other than their parents, and we appreciate your willingness to go to Tambo each year to spend time with the kids and push them on in their walk with the Lord.
—Dan & Judy Gill, N.T.Missionaries in Bolivia
Dear Pastor Von
First I must thank you for allowing us to serve the Lord through your ministry. It was a blessing to me and my four kids. I am praying the Lord will lead us to continue mission work at home as well as perhaps neighborhood communities around St Louis.
—Angy Mollet
Dear Von
Thank you for the gift and also for the pleasure of your company. You don't leave a person as you found them. There is a refreshing and disquieting way about the way you see people and opportunities that doesn't leave a person as they were. Do you do this on purpose? I hope our paths cross in the near future and we challenge you to keep on bothering people.
— Steve & Mary Wyma, Missionaries in Bolivia
Dear Von
I've been meaning to say for a long time now, Von, that I really appreciate how you brought me up in the faith and watched over me! You've been like my second dad (only Christian) and God has used you so much in my life. He used you and Virginia to make up for my non-Christian family, and I thank God for that.
Pastor Von
I don't know if I ever told you that you are a role model for me. I don't know of anyone who lives a life so close to God. Have a wonderful Christmas Season.
— Ted Boyer
Believe it or not, it was 18 years ago (give or take a few months) when I first walked into the downstairs of C.E.B.C. and listened to a man named Von tell of the love of Christ to a group of teenagers who were being told by their friends and society that God was dead. I remember so many of the lessons you taught ... the blow gun you used to teach of trust ... the $5.00 bill in the Big Mac box where you taught us that all is not as it appears ... the $20.00 bill you burned to show us not waste time ... lessons that I have used time and again with other kids in different places. I thank God for you. For the conviction of your heart which, through the power of the Holy Spirit, you transplanted into the hearts of those young believers. Through the many struggles I have had with faith and submission and guilt and imperfection, your lessons have been the bedrock on which solid things have stood. God truly used you to build a strong foundation in my life. I also remember you advising me to marry a strong man because I would drive a weak man to divorce or alcoholism. At the time, I was offended ... but after 13 years of marriage to an extremely strong, patient and compassionate man ... I see again the wisdom of God in the words you used. Faith has never come easy to me. I wrestle with God more than I rest in him. A weaker man would have left me and God long ago ... but God has truly blessed us in each other. We fit ... we balance each other's weaknesses and build up each other's strengths. If it weren't for those words, I might have settled for passion rather than depth in my marriage partner and I would be the worse for it. But beyond the things I remember you doing personally, you have also stood as a strong advocate for the poor, the weak and unloved. You challenge those around you to be God's compassion on earth and He will bless you for reaching so many. In short, again, I praise God for you.
— Laura Morefield
In my eyes you are king of the jungle. You are focused and in control (or can fake it well!) You are an example that challenges those in your presence. Thank you for teaching me how to be a leader & better servant of the Lord.
— Joy Van De Hoff
Dear Pastor Von
It's been a while! How are you feeling these days? Von, you are still on the top 10 list for me. You challenged me and I learned a lot from our times together. I left my business as a software guru last year to join the Christian Environmental Association. We are doing a lot of things in the area of Biblical environmental issues ...
— Doug Henderson
We thoroughly enjoyed Pastor Von's recent ministry here at Tambo. The boys in our dorm really appreciate his openness and willingness to be vulnerable. Thank you for your ministry in our hearts and lives as well as the lives of many others around the world.
— Jay & Jamie Cusimano (Dorm Parents)
Dear Pastor Von: We took up a little love offering for you the week after you were here for our Spiritual Emphasis Week. This offering came from both students and staff alike, and was one way we felt we could tell you thanks for your time and ministry among us. I really appreciated your time here with us, as did many others, and I want you to know that we felt privileged to have God's ministry to us through you. Thanks for being available ... to us and to the Lord.
—Dan Ketterer, School Director, Puraquequara
Von
We just want to let you know how we were blessed by your genuine spirit and life giving message to the people of Mexico and of course to us and our youth. We are committed to your ministry as always and will continue to hold you up in prayer.
— Ron & Marge Grant, Jenny, Heather, Luke, Simon, Aaron, Chad, Jacque
Dear Von, Over the years you have been a constant example and encouragement in our walk with the Lord. Few people live out their faith with such authenticity. Thank you for being a faithful servant.
— Ron and Margie Grant
Dear Von
I just wanted to take a quick moment to jot you a note and say that I appreciate your life, ministry and all the years of investment you poured into us young people so long ago. I trust you are encouraged as you look around and see how God has multiplied your ministry through so many others and I trust that you are also encouraged in what God is doing in and through my own life. Although perhaps our ministries all take a little different focus, I think you should be very encouraged to see how the Lord has used you in such a diverse manner spreading the Word all over the world. Be encouraged Von, and thank you again for your encouragement and investment in my life. God Bless you very much
— Rick Johnson
Dear Von
I wanted to thank you again for the great trip and all you and the guys did to make it happen. After you spoke on Thursday night, we had almost 3 hours of sharing, crying, talking and praying together. You had the spark that got it all going.
— Vic Russo
Dear Von
Did I ever mention to you, Pastor Von, what touched Mike to the depths of himself? One Christmas Mike went with you to give Christmas gifts to little ones in Mexico. In giving one small, slightly torn, stuffed animal to a small boy, this child reached into his pocket and gave Mike, in return, his gift ... a firecracker. In telling me of this that night, Mike was overwhelmed and has been solidly dedicated to others, ever since
— Dorothy Klitzing regarding Mike Gottemoller
Dear Von
Our kids are still living their experience from August. It's good when the Lord really gets a hold of the heart & they keep their commitments they have made on missions trips. Thanks for all you have done to help this work begin.
— Vic Russo, Pastor to Students, Castor Valley
Dear Pastor Von
We are in your debt. Thank you for teaching my people to serve. Your friends at 1st Baptist Chirch, Hemet, CA
— Pastor Tom Hilterman
The following are some comments from speaking to NTM Missionary kids at their school (Colegio Binimea) in Chihuahua Mexico
Dear Pastor VonThe following letters & notes written by PNG Missionary kids. Spiritual Emphasis Week, October, '98:I'm finally getting around to writing you on the morning of our first day of break. I did want to wait a bit before I wrote, to see if the kids were going to respond to the challenge you gave them. I'm happy to report that they did. All of the response I received from Spiritual Emphasis Week was positive. It was a big hit! Thanks a lot! I'm enclosing our school paper so you can read for yourself some of the kids responses. In the paper you will also see that the kids took a trip to a Salvation Army orphanage. They raised their own money and bought the kids gifts. There were 73 kids in all. On our way to the orphanage the kids were kidding on how they were going to pick the ugliest and smelliest kid to befriend so Pastor Von would be proud of them.
— Dorr Granger, M.K Teacher/Director
The visit to Caborachi was excellent. I think Spiritual Emphasis Week was extra special. We certainly learned a lot from all the things Pastor Von shared with us, even from our devotions too.
— Heidi Sharp
Pastor Von is the greatest Youth Director I have dealt with in all my years.
— Brandon Johnson
The meetings with Pastor Von were very good. He is a wise man and I learned a lot from him.
— Katie Corley
I had a whooping, jolly good time in Caborachi. I really liked Pastor Von because he was funny.
— Shawn Holt
Just in case you don't remember, I'm Chino from Rose Park Orphanage. Well, I just want to wish you a Merry Christmas and may the Lord use you in '96 as he did in 95. Just to let you know that I really appreciate and thank God Almighty for you and the impact you had in my life, all your attention—talks and examples—lease keep doing good and remember your job is not in vain—I know!
— Jose Magallanez, Chino/Rose Park Orphanage
Dear Von
Thank you so much for coming to share at all three chapels at Hillcrest Christian School on Missions Day! The teachers and the students really enjoyed you. The principal, David Kendrick, would really like to have you come back again next year, too! Your message was excellent ... informative and challenging! I think that you really planted some seeds among our students. May God bless you and Spectrum Ministries. Thank you for coming all the way from San Diego. May God Bless you with many, many eternal riches as you have given so much.
— Heidi
Dear Pastor Von
I will be praying for you, that you continue to bless the lives of others the way you have mine. In Christ
— Anna Henson
Dear Von
Your June newsletter, pictures and Taming the Tigers were extra well done and really spoke to my heart. So, I decided that I would sit down and say thanks for all your fine work. God has used you as He used Paul. It was youth missionary trips to Mexico from Fair Oaks Baptist that convinced three of our children to full or part-time ministry. Our youngest son, Jim, (17 years in youth work) is now senior pastor of Emmanuel Baptist in Olympia, Washington. Our youngest daughter, Debra, and her husband, Brent Meeks, were pastoring, but now are just very active in a relatively new work in Redding, California. Your work and service have effected a lot of lives for the glory of God.
— Dan & Alatheia Millikan
Pastor Von
I wanted to write an eulogy to honor you and thank you for all that you've meant to my life (as well as to the lives of countless others).
You came into my life when I was young and impressionable and full of spirit (and a few other things I've heard). You continually saturated us with the Word of God, not as if it were a chore, but as a plan book to enable us to get the most out of our Abundant Life. Then you seemed to give ALL of your time and energy to help us to have fun and enjoy being a Christian.
I have so many wonderful memories from blow guns with poison darts and rhinoceros beetles named Horace and Doris, to mini-bike rides, dune buggy rides, slave contests - complete with stocks for those who got pies in their faces, skate night, socials and church camp, complete with ex-lax in your malt (I had nothing to do with that) and regular trips to the frostie shop. I even still have a scrapbook with a toothpick wrapper in it that you once gave me and said put that in your scrapbook and don't say I never gave you anything. I had to go out and buy the scrapbook for it. You were a large part of my life and I Praise the Lord for the positive influence that you were.
One of the best things that you taught me was to serve. I loved going to the orphanage and to San Quentine and helping those who were less fortunate. I can't imagine the time and effort you must have put into getting the okay to take us across the border and then to bring the orphans up to the zoo and some to camp. I still yearn to go to Mexico and serve there. For now though, the Lord has allowed me to be a light at the local public high school. There I work in the health room and am fortunate to have a Christian nurse who is over me and she is very supportive of any efforts of witnessing on my part.
Thank you for allowing God to use you in my life and may He richly bless you. One last thing I want to thank you for is that you kept us so busy with Christian activities - helping in Boy's Club and Girl's Club, Tuesday night Bible studies in your apartment, Wednesday night Bible study at church, occasional Youth for Christ rallies, outreaches to other churches, outings of all kinds - I'm sure I'll never know all the trouble I was saved from by being kept busy with Christian friends. Thank you.
— Joette Layton Praamsma
Pastor Von, I was with the First United Methodist group which came down last week. I just wanted to write you to say thanks for doing what you did, following God's will. It has changed my life and many others. Before I came on this trip I had no idea about what I was going to do after college. I am seriously considering missions full time. Thanks for talking with us. I will be back next year and the next if God wills. Thanks again. a sister in Christ.
— Allison Rounds
Von
Thanks so much for your ministry and giving our kids a chance to see the real world, and the needs there are out there. Love in Christ
— Janice, E.C.B.C.
Dear Von
I thought I'd write. I wanted to begin by letting you know that I pray for you often. At least once a week I lift you up to the Lord. The positive influence you have had on my life is beyond measure, and I am still encouraged when I remember your example of what it means to be a disciple. Your ministry is still very viable and fruitful ... both Mark Humphries and Rick and Julie Christian now live in Colorado springs. While we were together, we all mentioned the incredible influence you have had on our lives, and the respect we have for you.
— Bill Hill
Dear Pastor Von
We've spoken to so many people outside of C.E.B.C. who recall how you inspired them to minister to the needs of the lost. It's so easy for people to get caught up in our own mixed up priorities. Your messages, articles and commitment to missions help us to open our eyes and receive a Christ like perspective. We thank you for calling us to have compassion and challenging us to act on it.
— Tom and Sumi Nelson
Pastor Von
I have many great memories of you as my Youth Pastor. I know you have heard it a thousand times before, but you have had a great impact on my life. I want to thank you for being such a great influence to me and my family. We pray for you often.
— David and Jana Hahn
Dear Pastor Von
Thank you for all the pastoring you've done in my life. I'm greatful for the lessons I've learned both from your words and from your life.
— Janet Simpson
Dear Von
What a joy to be on your team. I will always be amazed at your stamina and love for people and God's work and Word. Your life and friendship have been a blessing, challenge, encouragement and role model for many years. Thanks for what and who you are.
— Anne Rideout
Thanks Von
The trip to Mexico was really enlightening. Your love for the kids and the lost world shines. It becomes an inspiration to all who come in contact with you and Spectrum. Our prayers go with you.
— Ron and Diann Mayo
Pastor Von has been and is a role model in my life, ever since I was eleven years old. I have nothing but respect and love for this man of God. For someone who has never been a father to a child, he sure makes a darn good father. Thank you Von.
— Efren Lopez
Pastor Von
We don't have words enough to express our appreciation for you. What an impact you have had in the world through those who's lives were changed and challenged to Go into all the world ... by your teaching and inspiration! Thank you for your heart for the unsaved.
— Jim and Betty Johnson
Dear Von
A long overdue thanks for your many faithful years of service to the Lord. Thanks for the many, many young lives that God has used you to minister to and lead into service for Him in the USA and abroad! God bless you and keep you under His wings.
— Loraine Davis
Dear Von
You and your work are such a vital part of C.E.B.C.. Thank you for your years of faithful service and for showing us what God's love looks like in everyday life. May God richly bless you. In Christ's Love
— Bill and Bar Reeves
Pastor Von, I have many great memories of you as my youth pastor. I know you have heard it a thousand times before, but you have had a great impact on my life. I want to thank you for being such a great influence to me and my family.
— David Hahn
Dear Von
We didn't grow up with the youth ministry here at C.E.B.C., so our contact with you has been a bit second hand. But second hand can only mean with greater value. We've seen our peers (40-45year olds) who've reaped what you have sown in their lives, lives of faith, lives of ministry. lives of commitment to the lost. And, we've seen your gifts with our own children ... you draw them to the Lord. Your humor (He's a funny guy. mom) your, in the best sense, worldliness, (watch those darts, dad!) and your willingness to preach the Word boldly, frankly and uncompromisingly to them. Thank you for reaching our youth and the youth wherever you go. They are our future!
— Joe and Laura Harrold
What an impact you made on my life as a 16-18 year old! I remember at a Bible study one night celebrating your 42nd birthday, I was 17 ... wow! I'm forty-two and so grateful and thankful for those wonderful foundational years as a teen at Emmanuel! God is so good. Thank you for your challenges. Opening the world up so a selfish teenager could see there was much God was doing in foreign missions, convalescent homes, orphanages etc. Y'know, I really feel words are inadequate here, but I just really, really thank you.
— Terrian (Gobrecht) Gutman
Hi Von
What a joy it has been for me to serve with you down in Baja. You taught me that little is much when God is in it. You are special.
— Virginia Crider
Thanks again Von for all you've meant in my life ... I know I'd not be out here had I not had an example and someone who put the bar high enough to be a challenge. I was not looking for an easy road but a worthwhile one, I don't think I'd be up to this life I started now but God in His grace knew that and brought you along when I was a kid. His timing for me has been perfect. Love you lots guy
— Brad Buser, PNG
Dear Pastor Von
Thank you again for taking the time to speak at Rancho. Pastor Jay, our associate Pastor said that the congregation was convicted after your sermon on Sunday morning, He noticed that they walked out silently, which has never happened as long as he can remember. Pastor Steve, our senior Pastor said this was the best missions conference we've had yet. You impressed the pastoral staff and the congregation with the need to reach out to the needy and to reach the unreached! You had a real impact on our church.
— Bill Schwenkmeyer, Missions Committee, Ranch Community Church
The other day I was listening to one of your old tapes What kids want a parent to be. As I listened I realized:
I have preached for years pretty much everything you said on that tape.
That, as I always say, just about everything I learned, I learned from you.
So I want to thank you and congratulate you for believing in me enough to make me good enough to preach to 6000 and have something really to say and say it well.
I love you, Von, I appreciate you. Thanks!
— Mark Shultz
You are constantly on my mind. I appreciate the ministry you had in my life and how you encouraged me in ministry as well. Thank you my friend.
— David Hopkins
Von, I know I really never tell you what you mean to me, we just kid around, but I'll tell you I feel very, very privileged to work under you. Almost 70 and still learning from God's Word. Thank you, thank you very much for your example. Thanks. With love and affection.
— Javier Ruiz
Von
I am one of the five young men you took to Zona Norte during Easter week this year. I enclosed a picture so you can place the face. I want to thank you for taking my friends and I there. That was the most powerful, sobering thing I have ever seen. It has had a lasting effect on my life and I hope I won't ever forget it. None of that would have occurred if you hadn't taken me there. I owe you a debt of gratitude and I hope I can help to change someone's life in the same way some day. I thank you for being an example of how a true servant lives and I hope to see you again. Thank you again for making an impact on my life! Keep me in your prayers and I will keep you and your ministry in mine as well. In Christ
— Nate Smith
Dear Von
Our grand-daughter attends Village Christian High School. She had an opportunity to come on a one day trip and see and experience your mission. Her vision was touched. I heard her ask her leaders ... could they return for a longer time? This grandma's heart is blessed by her response. Thank you for helping these young people see!!
— Jack and Bev Nare
There are so many things I would love to have shared on Sunday. Just let me say to you now how very much I thank God for you and your ministry, for what it has meant to me personally and to hundreds of others. I continue to pray for you daily!! I like what the poet says Grow old along with me, the best is yet to be!
— Liz Lonsdale
Von, it's Father's Day morning, I write to thank you who have fathered me in the Lord. Thanks for all your time, all your encouragement, all your discipleship, all you confidence and belief in me! It's made the difference. Happy Father's Day!
— Mark Shultz
Dear Von, You already know how much we admire and respect you and your ministry. You are one of a very few individuals who has been faithful to God's daring call on your life and refused any fanfare or recognition. But you have been recognized by the fruit of your ministry and the thousands, maybe hundreds of thousands that have been impacted by your solitary life. After last years convention we wanted to work out some kind of Christmas Project, but it just didn't happen. Maybe this year. For the last two years, Youth Specialties has given a portion of its profits to organizations we admire and respect. We hope this gift will help enable you to continue making a difference.
— Mike Yaconelli, Youth Specialties
Dear Pastor Von
I have been a fan of yours since the sixties when I first watched your amazing ability to communicate with a culture of young people the rest of the churches could not reach, nor cared to reach. I admired your ministry then and have continued to admire it ever since. I have always had a special admiration for your missionary journeys to some of the worlds most primitive peoples and wanted to express my appreciation for your willingness to sit on the board of BRAVO MINISTRIES.
— Chuck Workman, Episcopal Community Services
Dear Pastor Von
Hi! I am Andy. I went to Mexico with you in July. Thank you for taking us across the border and taking me to zona norte. It was life changing. I really appreciate what you are doing and thank you for your time with us. I had a wonderful time with you all and hope to see you again soon. With thanks.
— Andy Zsiga
Hi Pastor Von
Thanks for the input and investment in my life and the lives of my family and loved ones. Sue's whole family came to the Faith through your work. (I received a great wife in the bargain) and you forever impacted me spiritually. Von, we love you! Thanks for being such an unusual and revolutionary guy. May God bless you with another thirty five years. In Christ.
— John Clements, Pastor, Community Church of San Diego
Dear Von
I just wanted to formally say thank you for another great experience with Spectrum. I've been bringing youth groups into Mexico with you since 1987 and each time I have been rewarded with seeing teenagers commit their lives to full time Christian service. This year was no different. We even had three student leaders, who had accompanied me on a planning trip with you in Tijuana in May, commit their lives to missionary and ministry work before we crossed the border with our group in August.
God is good.
I appreciate your skillfulness with American groups such as mine. I feel safe with Spectrum and confident that my teens will have a life changing experience. Please express my appreciation to Efren, Pastor Juan and Jorge who guided our three teams. You have good men around you and they represent you well even in your absence. I'm looking forward to our next time together. Yours in Christ
— Ray Harris, Youth Pastor, Shadow Ridge Church
We know that Von will be gone to South America. He has a tremendous impact on the high schoolers wherever he goes. In all the years I have known Von, I have not heard one negative comment about him on his ministry. He is a real blessing to the school in Puraquequara in Brazil whenever he is there.
— Ron Lotz, Former Principal of NTM Puraquequara School in Brazil
Thanks for your part in Scott's walk with the Lord! Your ministry has touched many lives.
— Ken and Carol Learned, NTM
Dear Von
I wanted you to know that your ministry gave me the foundation for now some thirty years as a believer. I loved those Wednesday night meetings. I hope all is well ... and thank you!
— Barbara Lang Fuchs
Dear Von
You truly have been an example of a man who has lived a selfless life sold out to serving Christ through meeting the needs of the poor. I count it a privilege to know you and look forward to the possibility of working with you through Focus on the Family. God Bless you in your work.
— Mark Humphries, Family Focus Magazine, Assistant to the President
Just want to say thank you so much for all the years of faithfully following our Lord, and for the example this has been to me in ways I can't begin to express. You have impacted my whole life for the greater glory of God. I hope to continue to follow the example you have set, as you follow Christ.
— Cindy Harris
Von, I enjoyed your web page and stole nearly everything in it!! It was good to see you at Faith Academy last week. You were well received. There were many positive comments by students. I have appreciated your ministry for many years. You could say, you have been one of my Christian role models thru the years. Keep keeping on.
— Steve Abelman, BGC Missionary, Philippines
Dear Pastor Von, I know that many folks thanked you for your time over here with us, but as a field, we just want to say again how much we appreciate you and thank you for the time you took out of your own busy schedule to come over here and minister to us in so many ways. And while I know our rewards are in heaven and a well done from our heavenly father is greater than anything else, it is encouraging to know that your efforts are appreciated here on earth! So we say Thanks You again.
— Judy Ambrosius for the Philippine Field, NTM
Dear Von
A few years ago I came to know a need you had for your kids in Mexico for shoes on Family Radio here in New York. I remember quickly going to various thrift stores and gathered several boxes of shoes and sent them to you. Little did I know God was working in my heart towards street kids and have heard about Chris Jones in Mexico City who has a sidewalk Sunday school for thousands of kids to whom I have given also. I want to thank you for being an example to me through the years and now I'm planning a children's crusade in my Church in Bay Shore, New York Please pray for a harvest of souls so that we can follow up with a new believers class and also do home visits hoping to reach the families of the children we reach. I'm so grateful for men of God like you who have been faithful to live out their calling. Thanks and may God richly bless your ministry. Thanks again for your influence in my life.
— Amy Tummel
Dear Von
I'm sending this letter because it gives me a chance to say thanks for being the quiet giant all these years in youth ministry. You have influenced so many people, Von, and I'm one of them. Watching you (way back in those Forest Home days) really inspired me to be creative in youth work, and to stay committed to it over the long haul. Thanks for being such a great example.
— Wayne Rice, Youth Specialties, Author, Etc.
Dear Von
Even though I don't write very often, please be assured of my prayers for you and the Spectrum ministry. You are doing a great work! I shall never forget the impact you have had on my life; my salvation, growth and even the encouragement you gave me a long time ago in Chicago when I was trying to discern the Lord's will in my future ministry with International students. By God's providence, you just happened to be in Chicago at just the right time. Believe me your example has been an encouragement many times through the years.
— Phil Smick, International Students, Inc.
Hi Von
I received your letter, and I'm so happy because no mater how far away I am, you still remember me. And I always pray to God for you to continue with all you are doing for people of the poor neighborhoods. Honestly, I've got to tell you something. I thought that all Christians just wanted to change other people's religion. But you have changed my mind. I think it's great that you help the poor and don't make them follow you. Well, that's what I see, anyway. And my mother changed my mind about the way I was thinking about all of you. And you know why I had that image of Christians? The reason is one day a Christian talked to me about the wrong god and he was trying to change my way of thinking about the real God. But we all know it's not enough to have faith; we also have to do good deeds like help people who need helping. Just like you are doing. I really appreciate that, and everything else my mother tells me about you. I also want to thank you for all you've done for my mother. She is so happy working with all of you. I don't have to tell you how proud I am of her; I won't leave her again. I'm on a big mission to help my family ( my mother and brothers). I also want to do something for Maria and her children and all of all the people of Laguna. They're such a beautiful people, and the show a lot of affection. I love them because they're a part of my mother. Thank you very much, Von, and God bless you every day. Your friend.
— Esteban (Hortensia's Son)
Dear Von
You are always in my thoughts and prayers. I remember as a young man of seventeen that you discipled me in my faith with God. This foundation is part of what helped me to grow in my faith with God and His son Jesus. For the past twenty two years, since that time, my life has certainly had some good times and bad. It's my faith in God that has always carried me through. May God continue to work through you. In His Love, Steve.
— Steve Erickson
Von, sure do appreciate keeping in touch with you, i.e. you taking the time to keep in touch with me. I am in my last day at this congress. Von, laying all fanciness of words aside, my messages were great. No glory to me or you in that, but I sure do appreciate all you have poured into me, and I know I wouldn't be sitting here where I am-and I know those kids would not have heard those good good challenges I gave them-if it had not been for you. Thanks!
— Mark Shultz
Dear Von
A few days before I left Tulsa I was thinking about what we are doing in life, like we grow up, go to college, find a job, wife and get married, have kids but not necessarily that order, then when I came on the trip and heard missionaries speak and it really hit me good and the feeling keeps getting stronger. I wanted to tell you that you had a big part in this. I can't stop thinking about everything, it's really overwhelming! I hope some day to see you again and I probably will. I just want to thank you for everything.
— Gary Decker
Von, you've put a new song in many a young heart. I've watching ever since at the location in Pacific Beach when Wednesday nights they were hanging out of the doors and windows by the hundreds.
— Lucille McKinnon
Von
Thanks for being a servant of God! Thank you for your dedication and commitment to the Lord and His mission work. This is the third time I have brought a group down to work with Spectrum. Each time your life has been both an encouragement and a challenge to myself and other team members. God has used you and Spectrum Ministries to touch our lives as well as many others. Thanks again for submitting your life to God and allowing Him to use you to challenge us. Love in Christ
— Jason, Youth Pastor, Country Oaks Baptist of Elk Grove, CA
We want to thank you, brother Von, for your many trips down this way to minister to both the young people and to those who car for them; I know it hasn't been easy, and sometimes we have a difficult time expressing our heart felt appreciation. So be it known to you—you have been a blessing to us, and I'm sure many young lives have been enriched through you. And come back whenever you can—the latch key is out and the coffee is hot most of the time.
— Bruce Hartman, NTM at PQQ
Pastor Von
One night while we were talking you said something that I will never forget. You said it makes no sense to talk about a round world in a square building. I remember you telling me how you took a group of kids to the dump to talk about Matt. 25:31-45. I could not take my group to the dump Sunday night, but we did want to do something, so my kids made this care package for you to give the kids in Tijuana. You are doing wonderful things, I guess I should say that God is doing wonderful things through you. Thanks for that ... you inspire the rest of us. God bless you.
— Johnny Peters, Youth Worker, First United Methodist Church, Tulsa Oklahoma
Dear Pastor Von
Johnny our summer intern was sending this stuff to the kids so I wanted to write you. I wanted to thank you for everything that you've done for the kids in Mexico. I would rellay like to get more information on the New tribes mission, it sounds cool! I will see you next year and I already can't wait, so you'll get to see me again. I'll write you later if you write me back. In Him, Matt Zsigo.
— Matt Zsigo, First United Methodist Church, Tulsa Oklahoma
Pastor Von
Thank you for allowing us to minister alongside of you and your team in Tijuana. Our students were moved and challenged by your life and work. We look forward to future times of working with you. May the Lord bless your work for the kingdom! Serving Him, Phil Greenwald.
— Phil Greenwald, Minister With Youth, First United Methodist Church, Tulsa Oklahoma
Pastor Von
Thanks so much for your message tonight. It brought me to tears and also to the realization of how awesome our God is. I want to recommit my life to Him and live for Him wholeheartedly from now on. I just wanted you to know that what you said made a difference and a huge impact on my life. You are very appreciated. Because of Him.
— Russ Brunn, PNG
Dear Von
I have been greatly blessed to have been taught by you since my spiritual babyhood as well as my physical youth. Thanks for faithfully preaching the Word as God directs you and living out God's will as you are led in touching lives for others in Christ's name. Your recent sermon about being a pipeline instead of a bottle neck for God was inspiring. I was able to share with a couple of others who missed it. Love in Christ
— Tracy Rickert, San Diego
To Pastor Von, Thank you for all your effort the work you do down in Mexico. Over the past fifteen years, you have truly inspired me with your life and ministry in Mexico. Here is a small token of my appreciation from the company I am currently working with. I hope to make it down to Mexico in December/January. God Bless you.
— Albert M. Hayashi, Interaccess Corp, Torrance CA
Hi Pastor VonThe following notes were written on two thank you cards from P.Q.Q.:We just wanted to tell you that you were a great encouragement to us, and we had lots of fun having you here. We loved your fun personality and all your stories. There is talk that next year we might have two Spiritual Emphasis, who knows. Maybe you could fly over for it again! (hint, hint)
Being our junior year, our class is extremely busy with putting on restaurants and many other events. We are finding that this time has brought our class together somewhat, and has also taught us that we need to depend on God fully in all areas of our life. Needless to say, it does get pretty hectic at times, so we need constant prayer. Thanks again for the encouragement you were to us in your stay here in P.N.G.
— Jill & Katie, PNG
Hola! Que tal? What have you been up to since you were last here? School is now into its 3rd term. In the business of everyday life, I find that God is usually the last thing in my mind, but God has used things in my life to get my attention and to make me realize that he needs to be first. I thank God that he never gave up on me. I'll be praying for you and your ministry.
— Ilai Burdett, PNG
Hey Pastor Von
How's life? Thank you so much for coming over here and sharing to us. I really enjoyed it and learned a lot. Thanx. I'll be praying for you.
— Dave Emerson, PNG
Hey Pastor Von
I was very encouraged at your coming over to talk to us. Maybe you can visit us again some day! Thanks a lot.
— Simon van Haun, PNG
Hey, thanks for coming over and talking to us here in P.N.G. My past life has been pretty screwed up. The things that you talked to us about really helped me. I've been in quite a bit of trouble at school and home, but the things you had to say made me realize that I can't go on living like a lukewarm Christian. I'm working hard to change now, and with God's help I think I will be able to overcome. I enjoyed you coming and hope maybe you can come back some time. I'll be praying for you and your ministry.
— Tyler Aholf, PNG
Dear Pastor Von
We are SO sorry about the great delay in getting this letter to you. But nevertheless, here it is finally. I wanted to thank you again for coming and blessing our hearts with your messages. I have some wonderful memories from that week.
How are things going for you in your ministry? I pray God is blessing your work and many are being led to Jesus.
— Shondia Verduyn, PNG
Hi, I don't think you know me, but I'd also like to tell you thanks for everything. There was one night you spoke that really just made me wonder where my own faith was. It's so easy to go off track on our own way, but all we need to do is look to Him.
Thanks again! — John W, PNG
Dear Pastor Von
Sorry that we haven't written to you sooner, but I want to say how much I have been looking at my own Christian walk. I have been a Christian since 6, but my walk with the Lord has only really just started. I enjoyed everything you said and thank God for sending you with his message. Thanx again.
— Emma Boothby, PNG
Dear Pastor Von
I doubt that you remember which person I am, since you met a lot of people here, but I thought I'd tell you that some things have been happening here. We started going to a youth group across the road and half the time the people don't show up (PNG culture), but there is a market right outside the building so we talk to the people and it is just awesome to see how God is working in our lives in being able to witness to the people and share with them, as well as see how God is working in the national believers in the youth group. God is so awesome. Thank you so much for coming.
— Chrissy Rodgers, PNG
Hi Pastor Von
Anyway—how are you doing? Schools going fine here. I'll be graduating in June and heading back to South Carolina. If your nearby, pop in. Some of us in the senior class were thinking about flying you over to speak at grad. Cool idea huh! Unfortunately, the class can't afford it. Thanks for speaking to the school—as you know, everybody was challenged and had lots of fun. I am one of the guys you talked to in our cabin Saturday afternoon. Thanks for the stories. Sorry about the white out. Too bad the Padre's lost last year.
— Jonathan Edwards, PNG
Pastor Von
The Lord has taught me a lot during this Retreat! I admire you and your work a lot. God is truly working in the lives of others through you.
I would like to ask you to be praying for me. I'm 18 years old now. I'm going to graduate this semester and I'm not sure what the Lord wants for my life.
I really want to serve God in all I do. I know there is no better way to spend my life other than allowing Christ to use me and work through me. There are some things that are holding me back from serving God. One of them is sports, mostly basketball. I love to do sports and especially basketball and what happens is that I end up spending a lot more time in sports than in God's word. Also, I was thinking about buying a motorcycle, I love motorcycles also. But I know there are better ways in spending my money.
So please pray that God will work in me. That I'll give up all my earthly dreams and expectations and just live for Christ! Please pray for me now and for my future.
Thank you a lot for planting the seed of the word in my heart. Now please pray that it will grow!
— David Mork Denelsbech, Vianopolis, Brazil
VonThere are too many things to say and thoughts to express to convey my thanks and deep appreciation for your time with us and me. Brother, you are truly a light—a veritable spotlight—on a hill. The many things you've said mean so much because your life is proof of Christ in you, that you LIVE what you preach. Keep up the great work! I look forward to visiting you and your people in the U.S. and Mexico. Thanks for challenging ALL of us to keep serving our Savior!
— Tom Lotz, Teacher PQQ
THANKS MAN! You make God's Word practical and useful in our lives! I'll never forget you, man! Peace
— Jame S.
Thank you, Pastor Von. I appreciate what you taught us. It will have great impact in our lives. God bless you
— Kyrong

— Mike M.
Thanks for sharing with us. I will keep you in my prayers.
— David
Hi Mr. Von
I'd just like you to know that you created a very big impact in my life and I'll never forget you. I pray that I would be humble and that God may work through me by His grace and mercy. I thank God for bringing you in our lives. If we don't see each other again, then we'll crack jokes in heaven. Love
— Reuben W.
Adey Mr. Von
Thanks for challenging me to be an active Christian instead of a passive one. I hope I'll never forget and will live for Christ putting my life on the line. Pray for me when you remember me. Pray that I will make waves where ever I go. Thanks
— BJ Spor
I wish I had someone like you to disciple me. You spoke the 100% truth and confirmed the answer of many questions I had. I'm going to run. Jesus gave me life, I hope I'm willing to give up physical life if needed. Please pray for me. Thank you. THANK YOU! for coming!
— Jevon Rick

Dear Pastor Von

— Jodi
Pastor Von
I was really encouraged by the stories you told about kids who weren't afraid to talk about Jesus in public schools. Next year I'll be going to a public school in the states. I've been challenged to live radically for Jesus. Thanks
— Natasha Fast
Hey Pastor Von!
I'm so glad you could come down here and be with us. Thanx for the message! I needed it and I hope it'll help me. I want to give my life to God completely, however that'll be hard and to serve completely with the cares of this world interferring. I'm glad there is a person like you, who we can share our feelings and ask questions. I'll miss your funny jokes. Bye!
— Adriel Rich
Pastor Von
You have made a huge impact on the lives of people, young and old! Thanks for being a blessing to us. We're privileged to have spent some more time with you this visit. We'll be praying for the rest of your travels and ministry opportunities. We so appreciate your support and encouragement to us. Kristie wants me to tell you she'll look for a nice frog to kiss on the lips! Lotz of Love.
— Sue
Pastor Von
Thanks so much for coming and sharing with us. You really encouraged me. It's so easy to get distracted by things in this world, but it is so true that giving yourself completely to God is the best and most rewarding way to go. I've gotten to experience God's blessings in my own life and seen God bless my parents tons. Thanks again.
— Katie Bowden
Hey Von
How is it going? doing fine here. I did not get to thank you for what you talked about while you were here. All of it. It helped me a lot. I have been struggling in that area lately. i have a girlfriend and sometimes i think i get too wrapped in la la land and not pay attention to life and what I really should be doing. My girlfriend has been struggling also in the area of devo's and walking with the lord and ups and downs, etc. I know it helped both of us. thanks, you are an awesome speaker an I am going to miss you next year. well, just wanted to let you know that your work is not in vain. Talk to you later. God bless you. Love
— Andrew Bunn, Tambo
Hello sir, how are you today? I am fine. Oh, let me introduce myself. I am the guy who walked you down to the farm the night before you leave Tambo. I hope you recognize me. I just want to thank you for the good time that I had while you were here. I am not trying to criticize any(staff mebers)body, but I really needed to hear some good sermons that would make me laugh and get good mesages out at the same time. I wished you would of spent some more time with us. I really enjoyed being around you and hear your stories. Anyway,Actually, I wrote you a email before, but it didn't get through for some reason and I wrote in it all things that I wanted to say to you but now I can't remember so ... sorry. Oh, I wanted to thank you for your ministry because I was planning to become a missionary or some thing that has to do with a missions since I was a freshmen but over the year, I wasn't sure if that is what I really want to do, but you kind of brought me back, what should I call it, like a hope or a desire to be involved in missions again. Thanks again. Well, I got to go now, but I hope to hear from you soon. bye.
— Tu amigo, Sung pil yoon
Dear Von
I hope you are doing well. Last night I was sharing with my oldest daughter, who will be fifteen next week, how you discipled me when I was seventeen. I shared with her the first bible verse you had me memorize. Phil 2:3. I wanted my daughter to know how important this verse is, and if she applies it to herself, how it will greatly impact her life. My wife Laurie and I have five kids, and they all go to private Christian schools. I guess what I wanted to share mostly with you Von is, I thank you for taking the time to disciple me twenty two years ago. The impact is still being felt as I pass on these bible verses to our children. You are truly a Godly man pastor Von, and you will be an inspiration to me always. I will continue to pray for you and Spectrum ministries. With love in Christ.
— Steve Erickson, San Diego
It's a special blessing to receive your letter each month, Von. The months roll by and become years, and looking back through the years I've gotta say; You've remained true to your calling. We are who we are today because of your commitment and yes discipleship. So thanks in a huge way.
— Rick Christian, Colorado
Thanks from kids at T.T. as a result of a gift I sent their youth group through Spectrum.
Thanks so much for the money. Now we will be able to do some extra activities. We were hoping to do another party for the Indian kids with our kids, now it looks like we can. Hoping you'll be able to come down next year.
— Cuckie
Thanks for the money. I can't express how thankful I am. Thanks for coming down the other years. I really learned and enjoyed your time here.
— Scott Rodman

Others have thanked you for the support you sent us but I would like to also thank you for all the patience you've shown us and for your great stories and games that you've brought to teach us how our Holy Lord can work. He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of the Lord He is my refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust. — Psalm 91:1,2
Dear Pastor Von
Happy birthday. Wow 70!! You are loved by so many people. You have touched so many lives. I thank God for your ministry. Your example helped me choose my career (Nursing) I wanted you to know how valuable you are in my life and so many others. Much love to you in Jesus.
—Margi Molano, Nurse
Hi Von
We inherited some money and wanted to share the blessing with you. Your name came up in conversation with a youth tour group the youth guy referred to you as the legend. We are thankful for your influence on our lives and on others. Joyfully
— Ron and Margie Grant, MAF, Ecuador
We love you pastor Von, I'm impressed at how you keep going at your age and your intellectual knowledge of the Word and even life itself. Your such an example to follow, I mean it. It was great to hear your teaching and words of wisdom. I felt like a sponge soaking it all up. Your like a breath of fresh air on a hot and humid day or like rain after a long dry season. Keep up your ministry with people as God has really used you around the world influencing Californians to Mexicans to Missionaries, M.K.'s and Yanomami. Keep plugging and bringing forth fruit and we look forward to seeing you next year or here there or in the air. Love and prayers.
— Kim and Larry Dye
Wow! Great to hear from ya! I hear you stirred up some dust in the NTM camp and started a revolutionary change in NTM's administration a few years back. It is good to see the changes! I can't believe what an impact you had on our lives in the short times we spent with you. I was talking to Dale Shaylor the other day about you ... and we were commenting on how you always were in the groove ... as kids we could relate to you ... I say all this to say ... Keep up the good work
— John Haslam, Skystorm Productions
Dear Pastor, I enjoyed your web-site. I met you briefly twice at Kauai Christian Fellowship. I remember and appreciate you. I trust you are well and productive at your work. I thanks you for helping me figure out what my problem is, and to put a name to it (Brinkmanship) I have struggled so long, but didn't know what my problem was. At least now I know and can begin to work at changing. Have a blessed holiday season.
— Linda Alt
Sure appreciate you Von. Much that we do has your fingerprints on it!
— Ted Limpic, Missionary in Brazil
